If that was true, then the concept of luxury cars, SUVs, L.A. car vanity,
and 250,000 seats filled at last year's USGP in Indianapolis would be
ridiculous.

Rather, Americans do care very much about their cars, some more than others,
but most see them as modes of point A-to-point B transportation. In Europe
and elsewhere, the tradition of driving for driving's sake prevails in the
minds of American enthusiasts, although with the Westernization of Europe
(higher population, more traffic, more road construction, noise/emission
laws) I wonder that their reality is closer to ours now more than ever.
