[Fwd: Triumph Memorial Fund (longish)]

Hello all,

If anyone would like to contribute as an individual to the Triumph
Memorial Fund, this message from the Triumph 2000 Register tells you how
...

Phil Wardle

Listers,
I have not been asked officially to undertake this but it seems there is a
picture of someone failing to get an act together and do some convincing tub
thumping.
The picture briefly is this.
Many, if not all/most of you will know the former factory site of Standard
Triumph in Coventry has now been demolished. The only building still
standing is the former Social Club which has protected building status, thus
it has been spared the demolition hammer. Coventry City Council have granted
Planning Permission for a Memorial to be erected just outside the Social
Club. Broadly, it will comprise a four sided Standard Triumph shell design
in stainless steel and the cost of this is Pounds 5000 (about US$ 8250). All
the Standard Triumph Clubs in the UK have been asked to contribute to this
cost but AFAIK, no-one has asked the overseas clubs or owners whether they
want to contribute as well. If true, this seems pretty daft (and
discourteous too) as well in excess of 50% of the company's sports car
production was exported and far more of the cars have survived outside the
UK than in it. As a former employee, I'd like to see this Memorial become a
visible reference point for visitors and Coventrians alike and I'm offering
anyone who's interested, the opportunity of sending in their own
contribution. There is absolutely NO upper or lower limit to the value of
how much you want to give and I'm wondering if any lister who reads this
would like to offer a buck or two, or more or less?
Because banks in this country are such a pain in the bum with the charges
they levy for clearing cheques or converting notes into Sterling, you can
make your contribution by credit card and fax the details to me. This
hopefully gets round server security. If you would like to support this
move, your contribution should be in sterling and your credit card company
will handle this at probably the best exchange rate around. It means you get
the best exchange rate deal and the proceeds in sterling are maximised. As a
guide, the exchange rate between the Pound and US $ is about 1.65. To
convert a notional sterling contribution into dollars (so you know what
you're spending) multiply the pounds by 1.65. Alternatively, to convert the
dollar(s) you'd like to give into Sterling divide the dollars by 1.65.
You can fax me your CC details. My number from outside the UK is 44
(international code for the UK) followed by 1608 662970. My phone is a
phone/fax so just hang on till you hear the typical fax whistle. Prior to
that, the machine is working out whether it's a human being or a machine
ringing it.

On your fax, specify:

1. Your full name,
2. Your credit card type - Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard
3. Card expiry date
4. The sum in POUNDS that you want to pledge
5. Your E-mail and 'snail' address.
6. A handwritten or typed statement that you authorise The Triumph 2000
Register to collect these funds on your behalf for the Standard Triumph
Memorial in Coventry. I'll then sort out how the pledges are directed for
collection by our Treasurer.

When your CC statement comes through, you'll notice a charge will have been
drawn against you by The Triumph 2000 2500 2.5 Register. That will be your
contribution to the Memorial.

Sorry this has been so long but I hope you will convey these details to ALL
Triumph people you know who are not e-mailable - and can you get the info to
your Club Newsletter editor so he/she can extend the appeal?

Many thanks

John Mac

PS - Just one thing. The UK is +5 hours ahead of Eastern Time and I do like
to go to bed and sleep undisturbed. My phone has a bell to wake the dead, so
if you could think of me enjoying my beauty sleep from 7.0pm EST onwards,
I'd be most grateful.
