Steering play

I have a MK2 1973 Stag and notice a lot of play in the steering rack,
together with a poor feel on the road. It passed it's MOT last march
but I am unhappy with it.

My question is, where are the worst areas for play. Are they the
balljoints, the internals of the rack, or the universal joints in
the shaft from the steering wheel to the rack?

When I grasp the wheel and wiggle from side to side, the amount of
steering wheel movement before tyre movement seems very small,
less than 20 millimeters at the steering wheel. On the road,
it feels worse than this.

Should I renew my steering rack bushes?
