Well in Sydney I've had the top of for a long time...even at night!
Actually there's nothing better than a cruise through the city on a warm
night. Anyway, I use tent ropes (rope with adjustable 'toggles', I'm not
sure what they are called) which are individually raised, maybe 10 cm at a
time, until the hardtop is clear of the car. They are hooked around the
front attachment points and also at the rear. That then becomes the storage
for the top. It is simple and reliable and does not require a frame, a
central lifting mechanism or a pulley or anything like that. Making the
hooks and putting 4 hooks in the roof was the only thing to do.
