A good start to the winter lay-up is to do an engine cooling system flush with
a detergent flush agent and coorosion inhibitor on one of those warm fall days,
refilling with a fresh 50/50 mix of corrosion inhibiting antifreeze and
distilled water, testing or replacing the thermostat, checking all hoses and
clamp connections, and other miscellaneous leaks around the intake and water
pump cover. The new antifreeze will protect you not only from the colder
temperatures, but halt the corrosion over the winter layup. If it has been two
years since the last radiator rod out, it could also be building a collection of
gue and crud, inhibiting heat transfer, and is due for an internal cleaning and
rodding.
Just to be safe, is it loosing any coolant? Could be an early sign of a
leaking hose or gasket somewhere. Any steam out the exhaust? When was the last
head retorque?
