Shipping a Stag
It's hard to part with a Stag, but LE2196LBW needed a new home, and
found a good one in the Netherlands. The body is good, so it was worth
looking farther afield than its recent home in Canada. Through a chance
contact via the Stag Digest - thanks, Richard - it was all done by
e-mail until the new owner travelled to Canada to visit the car. The
Digest also provided very helpful contacts while I was trying to figure
out the value of the car. It turned out that the new owner and I had
both got good advice from Mike Wattam, which may be why there wasn't
much haggling in the end.
For anyone looking at shipping to Europe, the costs might be interesting
(all in Canadian dollars). Various shippers quoted around the same
numbers, but this one specialised in cars.
Sixty miles from home to shipper by flatbed truck: 186 dollars
Shipping from Toronto via Montreal to Rotterdam: 2,180 dollars
Insurance (also covered the shipping cost) 285 dollars
Transport to the receiving agent's depot in R'dam 360 dollars
One day off work......
The car was shipped in its own 20 ft ISO container. They offered to take
it as roll on-roll off cargo on deck at a lower price. This means
spraying it with salt water for several days and didn't seem to be a
good idea, as it had never tasted salt before - it used to live in
Texas.
In view of the difference between European and North American prices, it
was worthwhile for me to pay for the shipping and still end up with a
very reasonable price.
I think I'll continue my vicarious enjoyment of Stags through the Digest
for a while!
