Here's a procedure I wrote up a while ago, when I took the decals off of
the visors in my previous '96 328is (also done on the '98 M3):
- -------------------------------------------
First off, take a look at:
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/~dalus/bmw/e36/interior/e36_visor_sticker_removal.html
for very basic information.
I used a rag & wore one of those rubber gloves my wife has for cleaning,
just as a precaution.
Use the Goof-Off to remove the label. Do a little at a time, and let the
Goof-Off soak in first. Use the rag GENTLY to peel away the decal. The
gentler & slower the better; less stretching of the vinyl/leather. I used a
lot of the Goof-Off, letting it do most of the work.
Once the label is off, you'll see some adhesive residue (I did on my black
visors). Use the lacquer thinner to remove the residue, again, going
slowly/gently to minimize stretching (some stretching will occur, though,
but don't worry).
Once the residue is gone, follow with vinyl conditioner. I like Lexol.
I found that putting the visors in the freezer for a few minutes shrunk the
vinyl back to normal, but not for good. But once the visors were in the car
for a few days, they were back to normal - you can't even tell I took the
labels off.
Hope that's helpful, and good luck.
