Re: Warming up cars

I have an oil temp gauge installed in my '95 M3. The car is stored in an
unheated garage. I live approximately 2 miles from the interstate ramps.

When the engine is completely cold (overnight), starting the car and driving
it toward the highway, the coolant temp gauge will read somewhere between
the blue area and midpoint. The oil temp gauge won't rise from it's lowest
reading (120F) until the car is on the highway, and I've driven at least
five miles. It takes at least another 5-10 miles for the oil temp to get up
to a real operating temperature.

I always take it easy on the car until the oil temp gauge has moved off it's
lowest reading. Taking it easy means no hard acceleration, and keeping the
revs below 3500-4000.
