318ti buying advice

I am helping a friend locate a nice 318ti.  I can
recall seeing some posts regarding a bad profile
gasket for the four-cylinder, M42 and/or M44,
engines.  (If I recall the engine designations
correctly.)  

I have the Bentley 3-series enthusiast's
companion, so that should cover the differences
in specifications for the various model years.

Could someone give me a rundown of the common
mechanical problems and things to avoid? 

Also, any leads on a good 318ti in the
Madison/Milwaukee area?  There was one at a
dealer that sold a week ago.  The rest that I
have found are in the Chicago area.
