Two comments...

First, when my '92 535i was new to me, I discovered that I had heated
mirrors by simply adjusting the mirror to one extreme of travel and
was able to simply look inside and see the wires and spade lugs.

Second, I had to use a slightly different method to swap mirrors.
The mirror on my car is held in by a rotating locking ring. There
is a small hole/slot in the bottom of the mirror body through which
you can insert a small bladed screwdriver or similar device to turn
this ring and the mirror can then be swapped.

BTW, thanks for the info on the wide angle mirror part numbers. My
old E28 535is had adhesive mounted wide angle mirrors and I really
got to like them. I'll have to put that one on the wish list.
