The quickest way to find out if your car is wired for heated mirrors is to
pop one of the mirrors off and look. You'll find two wires (black and
brown) with small spade lugs on them. To pop the mirror off, use a plastic
knife, insert it between the mirror glass and the mirror housing, and pry it
out of the housing. It attaches to the motor unit at four snap-on posts.
For anyone who has this style of mirror (used on the E34, E36 (non-M), E39
5-series), there's a Euro wide angle mirror that you can use on your
driver's mirror, and really widen your viewing on that side of the car.
The outside inch of the mirror has an even wider angle portion, that'll let
you spot things two lanes over.
Part number for the heated version of this mirror is:
56 16 8 119 724
I bought two, and also replaced the passenger side glass (it works on both
sides, just flip it). Three differences in using these mirrors:
1) Wider angle viewing on both sides of the car
2) These mirrors REALLY heat up (when compared to the US "heated mirrors")
and keep the mirrors dry in light rain
3) You lose the "OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR" warning.
I bought them in Germany, for around $40 each.
BMW also makes a Euro market wide angle mirror for the E36 M3, that REALLY
improves vision, since the mirrors are so small. I have them on my M3.
Part numbers for the heated units are:
51 16 2 267 191 (drivers side)
51 16 2 267 224 (passenger side)
These mirrors also heat up significantly more than the US units, and the
wide angle improves visibility on the driver's side. These M3 mirrors do
not have an extra-wide mirror strip (like the E34 mirrors do).
