1985 325e slight shake

The car is a 1985 325e with 42,000 miles.  Always garaged, always pampered.
This Saturday I noticed a slight thump in second gear at slow speeds.  I
have read on the digest before about "guibo" carrier bearings.  Can a DIYer
change these with decent mechanical skills and a good service manual?  Can
these go bad with age?  Even on a car with these few miles?  Can this be the
cause of slight steering wheel shake (even after a tire change and careful
balancing)?   Any help/information is appreciated.
