I have the same problem with my drivers seat and had the same problem with 
the passenger side as well.  When I had the passenger side done, I heard the 
same story as far as they don't just sell the gearing.  The story I was told 
was that you had to purchase the gears with the motor as well.  The part 
itself wasn't all that expensive, but the labor charges were outrageous.  
The labor + parts came in a little over $600 at a shop that specialized in 
bmw.  Hope this helps shed some light.  I would be interested to know what 
is involved in doing this if anybody has done it before so I don't have to 
pay all that labor again for the drivers seat.
