It is a nice engine but it, like its Valvetronic brother in the new
7er, has had its share of initial engineering problems. The worst was
some rather bad problems on the CAN-bus linking it with the automatic
transmission, that would cause both the DME and transmission
controller to shut down, bringing the car to a complete stop.  A
friend and I experienced this in his second E46 318i. The very first
question he was asked, before anyone showed up was: were you
accelerating coming out of a curve? :( Thankfully, that problem has
been fixed.
