M10 - Differences between 1.8- and 2.0-liter M10 engines

It is my understanding that the 1.8-liter M10 engine in later E21 320i's
and the first E30 318i's is a destroked version of the original 2-liter
M10 that came with the 2002 and the first E21 320i's. Are the blocks the
same and would it be that simple as to drop a 2-liter crankshaft in the
1.8-liter block? Anybody care to elaborate on these two engines and
their evolution?
