 Oh yes, chains can stretch.  Motorcyclists and bicyclists know this
well.  What you see as stretch is probably not the side plates
physically getting longer, but rather a little wear at all the hinge
points.  Last time I replaced my bicycle chain, it was a full link
longer than the new chain!  (Fortunately, timing chains are much
heavier duty!)
