How about this:

1991 318is

You get:

Light weight/better balance 
M tech suspension
Zingy M42 motor that is NOTHING like the old 318 motor.
Most of the high points of a 318ti.
all of the highpoints of a 325 is (except bags o torque)
Not a lot of the expensive gadgets that break and don't work as they get
older.

Best of all they are UUNDER APPRECIATED..therefore can be STOLEN for around
$4000-4500.

A 318is + $6000 of performance stuff would dust a ragged out $10000 E30 M3.
