Dave:
I recently solved a cold start/gas fumes problem with my 89 325i.
Ever since I bought the car (about 1 1/2 years ago) it has needed a
second
turn of the key to cold start. This was in contrast to my 84 318i which
usually ran on the
first turn of the key -- often on the first revolution of the
crankshaft.
The fumes problem was traced to a leaking fuel hose near the fuel tank
where filter
is located.
Since I replaced the hose the motor cold starts much quicker -- my
theory is that the
leak allowed the fuel pressure to go down and the extra cranking time
was needed for the
pump to build up pressure.
If yours is a California car, the fuel hoses have deteriorated due to
the controversial chemical
fuel additive MTBE. This "oxygenate" reduces emissions and causes
cancer in natural rubber hose. You may want to replace all of the
hoses.
