i don't know if you're referring to the letter in the most recent edition of
the Roundel that talked about this exact situation or not, but the
gist of the response was "when BMW starts offering lifetime warranties
on the trannies is when we'd recommend leaving lifetime fluid in them."

you are right about needing special equipment to properly flush one, though.
the Roundel's recommendation was to have it done at the dealer every 30-40,000
miles as i recall.  that should address your well-founded concerns about taking
your car to aamco.
