C'mon! The engine is an air pump. Air goes in the intake side and out the
exhaust side. It's not going to suck catalyticx converter pieces into the
exhaust side of the engine. It just WON'T happen.
Now, if a catalytic converter gets clogged, and inhibits the flow of exhaust
gases out of the engine, the entire exhaust system ahead of the catalytic
converter will heat up, to the point where the exhaust manifolds can glow
red! That amount of heat, combined with exhaust system restrictions, can
cause engine problems (warped head, cracked exhaust manifold, perhaps even
valve damage). In addition, any non-metal components close to the glowing
exhaust manifold (spark plug wires, hoses) can melt or catch fire.
So yes, a clogged catalytic converter can cause major engine damage, but
it's not because the engine sucked catalytic converter pieces in through the
exhaust ports.
