I posed the same questions to my mechanic on behalf of a friend of mine
('89 iX with 192k miles!). He stated that if you have a leak, the new
bolts won't help. What you need is a newer style gasket. From what he
said, BMW had several updates to the head gaskets over the years to try
to deal with the oil leak problem. Whatever you do, don't tighten the
bolts more. My suggestion would be to leave it alone for now and wait
until the leak gets bad enough to justify replacing the gasket.
