Speedometer needed [E28]

David Spiller  ASKS:

        A few weeks ago, as I was driving my '86 535i, the needle in the
speedometer fell to zero.  A day later, it worked again, but now it has
become almost constantly not working.   Now, I have nothing, the speedometer
doesn't pick up the speed nor does the OBC.  I was told by my mechanic that
I could have the gauge sent to VDO to be repaired, or I could get a new one
for around $450.  $450 is definitely out of the question,  is there any of
you that has a spare speedometer that you replaced when you changed your
cluster to an aftermarket that you would be willing to sell me ?  

ANSWER:  Does your mechanic know that the speedometer uses an electrical impulse
generated at the differential?  The OBC uses that same imput.  Sounds like a
loose wire or blown pickup to me.
