Re: E30 - Gas smell whereabouts
I suspect that one or more of your fuel lines under the hood are old, and
need to be replaced. If they leak, the fuel vapors will get drawn into the
ventilation system, and blown into the interior. My E34 is starting to do
this, so it's time for an exploratory mission under the hood. I had the
same issue with my previous E30 318i, and replacing all fuel lines under the
hood eliminated the problem. You might need 6-8 feet of high pressure
tubing, which can cost you 24-30+ dollars, but you won't need to replace it
again for another 100k miles/five years.
Be sure to replace them with the proper high pressure fuel hose. That cheap
$0.20/ft tubing at Pep Boys isn't the right stuff.

Subject: E30 - Gas smell whereabouts
Hello,
Recently I've noticed the smell of gas while driving my '90 E30. I thought
initially that I might have dragged some gas in with me on my shoes whiloe
pumping. But the smell persists. The car has 114K on it and may need a
new fuel pump. How can one tell if the pump is going? Also, if not the
pump, has anyone had the same experience - can you point me in the right
direction to find the potential leak?
Thank you
