John,
Sometimes the pistons need a bit of help to go back into the caliper,
particularly when the pads are worn down and the pistons are out a long way. I
use a big flat screwdriver or a chisel to gently push it back a little bit it
whilst turning the adjuster screw in the appropriate direction. I'd try that
first before you write the calipers off..
