spica cold start solenoid replacement
Hi!
i did replace the cold start solenoid on my '74 spider
with a good one from Wes, without removing the Spica
pump from the car. it is possible. also rather a
"PITA". if you are a dentist, it shouldn't be so bad
though, as it's done using mirrors doing most things
upside down & backwards. the way i did it is to:
- remove Spica pump inspection cover toward the outside
of the car
- working from that small access between the pump and the
fender remove the tiny clip & pin which connect the
solenoid's plunger to the pump guts. note what's going
on to be able to put the new one the same way.
- unscrew the old solenoid & screw in the new one
- reinstall the pin & clip attaching the new solenoid
plunger to the pump guts. Replace cover.
i didn't have a tiny digital camera then, or would have
taken a bunch of pictures, i've never seen, even in
Wes's fine manuals a detail of the solenoid's linkage.
i spent probably an hour disassembling, & a few days
later had built up enough reserve patience to do the
reassembly, which took many attempts & a couple of hours,
it's hard to get the parts lined up right & make the precise
moves (with hemostats etc.) to get it together.
One serious slip & not only might you lose an essential
part, but it'll fall down in the gearbox of the Spica
pump requiring it's removal afterall!
But, this solenoid change is possible & avoids having to
remove all the Spica pump linkage, timing belt, etc.
