yes, I imagine it could, it feels like the clutch sticks better if I
engage the clutch fast(this could be just a feeling tho)..

if you count snapping tree's  and -30c as fierce :) (luckily
not for  long perioids last winter), and yes the country is correct.
the road salts are not gentle..

is there a rule how far the bit that comes out from the slave cylinder is
supposed to go back in?

i don't think there is :\ at least there is no obvious way..


 The lever should be free to move very slightly once the pressure comes off 
it. The lever is pushed back by the clutch diaphragm spring until the 
spring is completely loading the clutch plate and stops pushin the lever. 
You should be able to push the rod into the slave cylinder freely by hand 
but do not do this more than 2mm or so as you could loose travel on the 
actuation of the clutch.
