Re: Removal of Spoiler on 164S/Q
A Digester asked how to remove the trunk lid spoiler on a 164S/Q as it was
stuck at the ends. Alfa used double stick tape to hold the ends of the
spoiler to the trunk lid. You have to carefully pry up one edge while
working a flat tool between the deck lid and the spoiler. I found this out
when I attempted to take it off to have it painted. A phenomenon that
occurred to my spoiler, and to others I have seen that have been removed is
they permanently warp and twist while off the car. Mine has never been
completely flat at the ends again. When I remounted it, I had to build up
hard foam pads carved to follow the warp in order to make the spoiler legs
appear to sit flush. It seems the foam the spoiler is molded from has
built-in stresses that are released when you pull it off the car.
A permanent solution that is possible is to glue threaded metal inserts into
the bottom of the outside spoiler feet. You can then drill through the
deck lid and pull the spoiler legs flush using bolts. Another way to go is
get so frustrated putting the spoiler back on that you find a used L deck
lid without the spoiler and stick it on instead. My friends black S looks
very nice without a spoiler
