But which year?
Picking nits again. (sigh).
David Ziglin writes "Am I correct?; the 50th anniversary of the Giulietta is
April 20th. Such an appropriate name, no?"
The prototype Giulietta Sprint was shown at the Salone di Torino in 1954,
followed by the Giulietta berlina a year later, followed by the Spider at the
Paris motor show later in 1955. Fifty years ago, 1952, was the second real
year of production for the 1900 Berlina, and the first real year for the 1900
Sprint; it was the year Alfa took first in the Mille Miglia in the "military
vehicles" category with the new 1900 M, beating Fiat, and started developing
the Disco Volante and the more important 6C 3000 CM which Fangio drove to an
honorable second in the Mile Miglia in '53. It may have been a portentous time
in Alfa's history, and the idea for the Giulietta may well have been already
germinating on Satta's back burner, but we can still look forward to
celebrating the 50th anniversaries of the various Giuliettas a few years
hence.
At least those are the dates in the books. Sorry 'bout that.
