Lubricating the speedometer cable

Whats the best method to lube the speedo cable in a '74 Spider? I
pulled the speedometer out to try from that end but the lube (motor
oil) wont drip through and the inner cable doesn't come out. If I go in
from the transmission side can I remove the inner cable? Whats the
suggested method?
