seatbelts

peter, to avoid any liability claims against me i say get new seatbelts.
however, i have disassembled the seatbelt reels and think your problem may be
a spring. when you take apart a seatbelt reel you will find two springs
inside. the first is a large concentic one that pulls the webbing back into
the reel. this one is not the one causing the problem. the second spring is a
very small flat thin one similar to the spring on the scissors of a swiss
army knife. this one keeps the inertia pendulum centered. the inertia
pendulum will move to an out of center position when you stop/start/turn
abruptly or roll over. when the pendulum goes off center, the reel locks.
this spring is very thin and becomes weak over time. if you remove it and
bend it back to restore it's function, you may find your belts working nicely
again. i've done it on mine, with good results. jeff ware, usa.
