RE: Those Damn Seatbelts!

    A couple of things go wrong with the inertia reel seatbelt
mechanism:

    Firstly, the latching/unlatching mechanism gets gunked up with
crud.  A simple degunking and light oiling of the moving parts will
restore things to normal in most cases.  Just do not get any oil on the
seat belt webbing or it will be an oil stain on your trowsers, or wife's
skirt.

Another area that goes bad are the bronze bearings.  Once it gets worn
and the shaft starts to skew, then the wratchet does not lock/unlock
properly.  In this case, it needs to be replaced.

I have also seen threads get wrapped around the moving mechanisms that
keep the inertia lock slightly extended, causing it to lock up
intermittantly, and seen the spring get hung up on a clog of rust.  In
this case, a bit of careful cleaning and removal of the threads and
burrs will restore the reel back to normal if it not in too bad of
shape, otherwise replace it.
    There are also some nuts and screws that tend to back out and jamb
up the works.  Take a look for those type of things.

For all your safety and liability folks out there who believe and trust
your life to the manufacturer, just go and buy a completely new set of
belts and reels, do not even mess around with attempting to repair the
old ones.
