Though this is onlymarginally related to Stags.....I have one of the "pure"
lock up type units on my 1972 BMW 3.0CSI.
They were considered somewhat troublesome and many have been replaced by
viscous ones from 530s. The operation is
quite interesting though. It consists of a small "brake drum" on the
outside with tiny " brake shoes" attached to a
tiny pressure plate affair. In front is a temp sensing bulb that presses
the pressure plate backwards when it gets hot.
This engages the brake shoes on the drum and the fan is locked tight. When
not engaged the fan spins only from bearing
drag and you can stop it with your finger. (Don't try this at home) Mine
works quite well.
Peugoet uses one that is electrically activated (505s)
