steering column question

I've got too much play in my steering wheel column.  I haven't taken it
apart yet.  Is it common for the bushes to wear excessively?  There
seems to be a bearing at the bottom of the shaft from preventing the
column shaft popping through the firewall.  There is a large amount of
play here also. Am I on the wrong track here with the bearing?  Is
there anything else I should consider changing while I'm tinkering?
