Time I placed my not so humble opinion on electronic igintion:
Your thinking to replace the Lumenition module is very sound.
Electronic ignitions were available in the 70's and are considered a
period modification for concours judging. First advantage of electronic
ignition is a more reliable and consistant spark across a wider range
of RPM's, resulting in better performance and efficient burning of
fuel. Higher revs, with points being mechanical, and as mechanical
things tend to bind and bounce, are where points give a performance
loss. Second advantage is set it and forget it. As points wear their
gap changes in turn changing the dwell imparing the ability of the coil
to develop the proper charge for a proper spark. Third advantage of
electronic ignition is that the wear so well know in the Triumph
distributors (dizzy's) that lend to unreliable movement of the rotor
shaft cam and base plate effecting the point gap and dwell. Electronic
modules replacing the points are basically immune to this wear saving
you some performance headaches from a worn distributor.
The disadvantage of electronics you have found by toasting your module,
and cost of replacement is a factor. But on the other hand, three sets
of points for a Stag almost pays for the electronic ignition. Points
can just be slapped in, adjusted, and you are off again. Points are
also a bit easier to troubleshoot and fix, and if maintained properly,
will give you very satisfactory performance, as I said, IF maintained
properly. Some electronics can be affected by heat if improperly
located, and moisture if not sealed.
So the solution? Enjoy your electronic ignition, keep the spare points
and dizzy parts in the trunk for that roadside repair if you burn out
the module. ;-}
