New Owner - various queries

Hi Alan

OIL PRESSURE
40 is fine. I don't believe in oil pressure guages per se but I guess you
have already spotted that. The only value is that if there is a change in
behaviour of the guage under identical conditions, it indicates something
may be wrong, anything from low oil level and consequent oil overheating to
stuckf relief valves or worst blown bearings (but even if you are actually
looking at the guage, you'll get the indication after your bearings have
gone).

STEERING
Stag steering is always as light as it comes and seems to get lighter when
steering components are worn out. Check it to see if you have a problem,
if not just try to get used to it.

There are only 2 ways to make it more solid. The first is definitely not
recommended and that is to fit all new components which does make the
steering stiffer, but any last vestige of 'feel' is lost.

The second way is by re-engineering which can be tackled by fitting a
different spool valve with a stronger torque bar. Reducing the maximum
pressure of the steering pump does not appear to work as maximum pressure
is needed only when parking.

GEARBOX OIL LEAKS
Both manual and auto 'boxes tend to leak oil. The auto cannot be cured as
the oil used is very 'seeking' like diesel oil. The manual 'box should be
reasonable except when the mainshaft or overdrive bearings are worn, you
know this is happening by the gearbox noises under power.
