Re: Stag as first car - questions...
Hi Julian,
I bought my Stag when I was 22 years old, and it was (and still is) a Rover V8
conversion
with auto transmission.
This conversion is known to most insurers, who don't penalise against it due to a
hangover
effect from the late 70s and early 80s when many conversions were made simply to
keep
the cars on the road.
The policy I bought then at 22 was around 270 pounds, from Jardine Faber (01604
639011).
It is social, domestic and pleasure for 5000 miles per annum. The nearest other
quote at the
time was nearly 500 pounds. This year, I renewed the same policy for 216 pounds,
but I'm just
over 25 now.
The reason that most insurance companies quoted at 500 pounds was that the car is
rated
at group 14, which is the same as things like XR3Is, XR2s, Golf GTIs etc. Bad
news for <25s.
Jardine Faber were the only company who were prepared to give me a classic policy
despite
my young age. They did not requrire my no claims bonus being a classic policy.
I can't remember, but I think this policy hinges on the fact that the Stag is a
second car. I'm on
my third year with it now. Most insurance companies are unsympathetic if they
think the
Stag will be your main car.
The SOC scheme is only available for over 25s with the Stag as their second car.
Good Luck, Dave.
