differential question

Hi Ben

The play in the diff is less than average, you're doing well!

You're right, no drain plug. You may be lucky to drain the diff oil if you
remove the bottom bolt from the diff rear plate, as on many diffs the hole
the bolt screws into, goes straight through into the inside of the diff, on
other diffs it is a 'blind' hole. In any case if you are going to chnage
the oil seals it is suggested you wait until you do this as you'll have no
proeblem with the oil coming out!

The diff always leaks slightly, particularly from the nose bearing, and
this is a problem. The orginal seal here was a leather insert seal, this
material was used because of its ability to run out of alignment, but burns
easily if temporarily straved of oil - it is still the best if you can get
one. Most Stag suppliers send out modern Weston polymer seals, these look
OK but only one supplier seems to be able to supply seals that don't leak
continuously - Hart Racing Services in London.

If you had any problems in the diff, you'd be hearing about it in terms of
noise! the two side bearings (output to the wheels) can get loose and oil
seals leak, these are easy to renew but other thna that, leave well alone.
