Wipers.

A number of wearing points in the wiper system cause this problem;

check wiper spindles for axial looseness in their wheelboxes and for
rotational play of the spindles on the wiper rack.  These wheelboxes can be
renewed.  If the rack is disconnected and pulled out of the wheelboxes it
is possible to carefully turn the spindles 180 degrees and refit the rack,
if this has not been done before it should give you much less backlash.

Check rack itself for wear (turning this round 180 degrees and refitting at
the wiper motor end can give a solution - if this has not already been done
before.

Check wiper motor.  There is an adjustment on the end of the armature to
limit end float, and that the large drive gear is not about to strip off
its teeth.  Also suspect axial movement in the large gear spindle - it is
possible to have new bushes made as I know of no source providing these off
the shelf.
