The conditions you describe sound fairly normal, you should get an element
of braking in 3rd speed but not much. Just as the torque convertor slips
to allow the engine to speed up under load, it will slip the other way on
deceleration.
Are you sure you don't have binding brakes or some other fault which is
causing the apparent deceleration? This might also causse overheating
under load.
I thought you were going to strip your gearbox to investigate the problem?
