Hi Alistair
We will see what else comes up but for a start its highly likely to be
electrical. A loosened terminal perhaps if the problem emerged as a result of
your successful speedo cable job.
Try running the car in pitch black dark with door shut and look up under dash
to see if anything is sparky. (You will need to be no higher than three feet
six inches to do this).
Have a torch handy to highlight the sparky area to identify it.
Again the voltage stabilizer may be faulty as you surmise.
You may have dislodged something under the bonnet so check all the Tacho wires
there as well. (Its not a bad idea to look under the bonnet with the engine
running in the pitch balck to check the high tension wires. Not related to
your problem but worth a check anyway)
