fuel indicator

Hi all

I'm just about to begin a major body restoration on my 1975 Stag and it seems like a good idea to solve one or two other little niggles at the same time. Here's the first......

At the moment, the low fuel-level warning flickers at just under half tank, and stays on when there really is very little petrol left.  Ideally, I'd like it to flicker at about first segment equivalent on the fuel gauge.  Can this be done or is my flickering just normal?
