Grinding noise

Looking through an old SOC Magazine (Oct 96) I happened upon a letter from
Dave Bergquist, and I quote:-

"When installing a Borg-Warner 35 transmission, be sure to count the teeth on
the input shaft. Input shafts and torque converters may not be the same. The
difference may be 22 teeth or 23 teeth, and a half inch difference in length.
If you put the short shaft into the original Stag torque converter, there will
be a terrible grinding noise"

He goes on to say he hasn't experienced this but must have heard about it
somewhere.
