I had precisely the same problem on my Mark 2 (1975) model in the summer
of 1997 - long (100 miles plus) runs at a continuous 70mph plus had the
needle up next to the red, with the additional electric fan coming on
when I stopped. It had what I believe is said to be the best of the
standard rads - the staggered 3 and 2 row model, and this was absolutely
clean. I changed it for one of Tony Hart's (HRS) uprated rads in Spring
of this year and the problem has not recurred (although given the
weather this summer maybe it wouldn't have done anyway!). The same type
of trip in 25 degree temperatures had the needle staedy just above the
centre of the gauge. I did fit one of HRS's front air dam / spoilers in
1997 but noticed no benefit. HRS radiators are not cheap (more than 160
pounds sterling) but mine certainly seemed to do the trick.
