Accelerator pedal

Hi folks,
This is not a Stag question.
My daily driver is a Citroen BX diesel automatic.
The problem is that for about a week the accelerator pedal
has become more and more squeaky. It started making the noise
only when I lifted of the power, but now it's squeaks as soon as I
touch it. I also don't appear to have kick down. This morning I
put my foot down (almost through the bulkhead!), but the 'box
didn't drop a gear.
Is my accelerator cable coming loose?
Is there a separate kickdown cable?
Perhaps I've worn it out! :-)

71,000 miles - six years old on Monday.
(Oh, Hell I'd better do something about insurance renewal.)
