RE:Unleaded Petrol
ym 2cents from here in Z
A large organisation here in NZ used an additive from the day of
introduction of PULP (96 octane ULP) in NZ.
Their vehicles were Chevy's, Bedford's, transit's that did about 3-4MPG
(ie they had a lot of "stuff" loaded on the back of them)
They ended up with VSR despite an additive.
The organisation flagged away the additive and waited for the engines to
"die" (cause they were going to no matter what.. the damage had started)
and then got them rebuilt with "the right valves" etc.
Point to note:
These vehicles were heavily loaded, so one would expect the loads on the
engine to be greater than a normal car. Perhaps this was a reason for
the additive not "working"
The type of unleaded petrol unleashed in New Zealand initially had a
rather negative impact on seals and tubing of a particular type.
(unfortunately I cannot remember what type). I remember talking to John
Parker (Pres. NZ Stag Owners club) two years back and he was replacing
seals on the inlet manifold for the second time within a few days
because the first replacement seals swelled due to PULP. Similar problem
happened to a colleagues Jag XJ6 S1.
The end result was a number of engine fires, a lot of press coverage and
a number of claims to petrol companies (some of which were paid)
Government involvement resulted in the chemical composition of the PULP
being changed, which has seemed to caused the problems to die down. (not
to mention the fires ;-) )
So apart from VSR, watch out for seals and hoses in the fuel system that
may be affected by ULP.
You may never have this problem in the UK , but it is worth checking
your fuel pipes out when u move to ULP
**There was never any problem with the introduction of 91 octane ULP.
