Re: Flushing Cooling system & Thermostat
Hello Nick,
I'd use the 82 degree t-stat. The overheating in traffic is typical
in a Stag where the cooling system is not at 100% clean and flowing
properly. Make sure that you have the radiator rodded, and that ALL the
tubes are intact, fins too on a stock original radiator. Make sure to
disconnect your heater core BEFORE flushing, or the crud will deposite
itself into the heater core tubes that are finer than the radiator.
Sometimes flushing will not remove or dissolve chunks of stuff blocking
the flow in a core tube. If the radiator is not sound, recore with an
uprated design, 16 fins per inch, 3 core minimum, 4 core maximum,
staggered core tube rows work best, like 3-2-3-2..etc. Fan and
torquatrol needs to be in good condition, blades all pitched correctly
if a metal fan, torquatrol unit should not allow the fan to spin more
than 1/2 revolution (engine off), or it is going bad. It should also
have absolutely no play front to back indicating the bearing is going
bad and will eat your radiator soon with a nice circular swipe of the
fan blade. Flushing the block...if the side block plugs are crusted
over on the inside, it means that your block has deposites in it that
will require additional detergent flushes to remove the crud.
Do you have a fan cowl? Will help between 5-10 degrees F at idle if
your fan is in good shape. Note that I have reproduced the original
cowling using composite materials. You can see it at the site listed
below with a writeup on its purpose.
