Re: Intermittent miss fire/Overheating

Hi Nick

Look closely inside your distributor. The cable terminals where they are
hled in the posts, are VERY close to the points. Could they actually be
touching from time to time?

Next try a new condenser. No real way of testing this other than by
substitution.

Are you certain your HT leads are in A1 condition. And the Distributor cap
includingthe carbon brush, no 'tracking' inside or outside cap?

If there is a condenser fitted to your coil for radio suppression, whip it
off temporarily.

The fuel pump is very difficult.
. If silent (and no petrol flow) it is clearly not working. Remove black
end cover and clean points
. if chattering fast, there is either no resistance to flow or it is not
actually pumping fuel at all
. if a steady click once or twice a second, it is pushing the fuel through
fine
. if body of pump is too hot to touch, mechanical problem in the pump
. if strong sparks from points, fit a new condenser

You are right to flush the radiator, this can only do good. As for
repairs, it depends who does it. The only likley problem is that an
unknowledgeable operative might just fit a new core. Many modern radiator
cores have a high resistance to both water and air flow and demand a strong
fan (with cowl) and a high flow water pump. Neither of these things does
the Stag have.
