Re: Stag Axles & Dry Dashpot
Hello Tim,
You are correct I believe on both answers to your questions:
Axles:
The axle splines do require a molybedenum based grease, very typical
for any of the half shafts. I use some military spec moly grease that I
picked up from surplus, but any good moly bearing grease should work
fine. I recall that the proper grease is spec'ed in the
TR4AIRS/TR250/TR6 manuals.
Carbs:
If you were splattering soot all over your trailer, then it is one
of the carbs, and the carb with the empty dashpot is suspect. Could
very well be that the damper is plumb worn out. The reason for the oil
is to dampen the flutter caused by each individual cylinder sucking in
its combustion mixture. With no oil, fuel metering oscillates averaging
an over rich condition, which you will notice if you pull the plugs.
Two cylinders on each side are feed by one carb, the other pair on each
side by the other carb. If you pull the carbs apart, you might notice
some vertical scoring on the damper walls.
I'll dig out my carb manual and get into it more in a couple of days.

Glenn Merrell
