Thanks for your note.
So it is not the diaphragms.
This is going to sound cheeky but not meant to be.
I am sure that the timing of the ignition is wrong, but rotating the
distributor as you have should have resolved it.
I think you have some ignition wires crossed. This would have the effect you
describe. I know you have checked them , but its worth doing again and not
time consuming.
The firing order from #2 cap post is    1-2-7-8-4-5-6-3  going anti clockwise
around the cap. (#2 positioned as you described. pointing at coil bolt)
I mention it because it happened once to me after putting on new wires. I had
3 and 5 interchanged by accident. (Both are close and wires same length)
If its not that I am sure you will get there eventually!
