Re: Cooling system flushing

Hello David,
Back flushing is ususally performed by running water at high flow in
the reverse direction as the normal engine coolant flow. This usually
requires removing the thermostat, an external water pump or water
pressure source, a heat source (optional), connection into your engine
main coolant hoses. I also recommend that the heater core and radiator
are disconnected from this type of flush, as crud will deposit itself
quite nicely into the heater core, usually plugging it. You might want
to visit this web location:
http://www.vtr.org/maintain/cooling-flush.html
and browse some of the other articles there. This is a self flush
proceedure for flushing your Stag using a chemical flushing agent.
Service garages may have an engine flush machine, but may not use
fresh water when flushing your system. If you use a service garage for
the flush, absolutely insist that they empty the unit using fresh water,
and not to flush your heater core with the engine. Insist that the
heater core is flushed separately.
